Generally Cakes n Ladders is closed every Monday and Tuesday, with one recurring exception to speak of. On the first Tuesday of each month we open up in the evening specially for an ongoing event called TableTop Tuesdays (TTT).
**This event was previously called Total Party Kill Tuesdays, but to make it easier to understand for newcomers (and since the occurrence of a true total party kill has been incredibly rare during past sessions), we rebranded it to TableTop Tuesdays in March 2021.**
TableTop Tuesdays are opportunities for lighthearted, low-commitment role playing. Have you heard of Dungeons and Dragons before, but never been quite sure what to make of it? Or maybe you love tabletop RPGs but just don’t have the time to commit to regular meet-ups for a large-scale campaign. Maybe you’ve got the time and want, but just can’t seem to wrangle up a group to play with. Or perhaps you’ve played and enjoyed such games plenty, but you want to take a stab at being the DM (Dungeon Master) and running a game for the first time.
If any of these sound like you, the TableTop Tuesday is the place to be. Each session is set up to be a one-off story that does not require ongoing attendance or knowledge of the game. The DM for the evening will introduce the world, let the players pick their character from a handful of presets (usually with room for adding some personal flavour), set the stage, and send the adventurers on their way. And it won’t always be D&D! TableTop Tuesdays are great opportunities to trial other tabletop RPGs and systems. Examples of some past TTTs include, but are not limited to:
- A party of goblins infiltrating a den of giant ants to reclaim lost treasure
- Normal humans (where you play yourself) living in Auckland who were bequeathed powers and must liaise with a local vampire legend
- A rag-tag group of stranded travellers who sign on as prison guards at a magical prison right as the magic fails
- Survivors of a Deadite invasion (a la Evil Dead) trying to escape a mall alive
Whatever the scenario, it’s always a fun time. Just don’t feel discouraged if your party gets overwhelmed and overtaken – in one-shot games there’s always the possibility of a total party kill!
TableTop Tuesdays are normally the first Tuesday of each month (there may be some exceptions) from 6:30 PM until the adventure ends, generally between 9:00 and 10:00 PM. Doors open at 5:30 PM, and it costs the same as normal game time – $3.00 per person per hour. We usually have an event page active for the next upcoming TTT soon after the most recent session, so be sure to keep an eye on our social for specific information regarding each monthly outing!
