The Auckland Fringe Festival is coming to town! From 25 February to 7 March 2020, over 70 live shows will be performed throughout our great city, and one of them will be happening in the most unsuspecting of places – our humble café!
Local improv group Improverished will be gracing us with their presence twice during the Fringe Festival to put on their show, “Can I Get an Underground Location and a Mythical Creature?”
But what IS this show? And why is it happening at a board game café of all places? Excellent questions! We’re strong proponents of storytelling, offering one-shot RPG nights in the form of TPK Tuesdays, and also happily allow D&D groups to meet up at Cakes n Ladders to host their own epic campaigns. Improverished’s show is “a high fantasy adventure entirely made up on the spot AND entirely controlled by the dice!” As they say, “it’s pretty much Dungeons & Dragons without the sitting down and doing maths part.”
“This is not a show where you watch people play D&D, this is a show where you watch as we act out D&D as the characters. Whether you’ve played D&D four times a week since you were two, have never played but love listening to D&D podcasts [like The Adventure Zone or Critical Role], or have no idea what Dungeons and Dragons is but would like to see someone pretend to be a wizard fighting an angry whale-headed octopus dragon; then this is the show for you!”
“Can I Get an Underground Location and a Mythical Creature” will be performed four times throughout the 2020 Fringe Festival, though only two of those shows will be at Cakes n Ladders. Join us for this epic, hilarious adventure on Monday 2 March and Tuesday 3 March, at 7:30 PM. Tickets cost $5 for children (14 and under), $6 for seniors and students, and $8 for general admission, and can be purchased via iticket.
If you’re interested in seeing the show but can’t make it out either of those nights, they’ve got more shows happening at other venues too! Check out the Facebook event page, or their Fringe Festival page for more details.
